Sahara Designs provides high quality Moroccan tile or zellige . Our tile is entirely handmade in Morocco by skilled artisans who use the same techniques as the Moors did in ancient times. From terracotta bricks to all glazed ceramic tile with ornate borders or patterns, our tile is authentic and unique. The geometrical patterns bring architectural beauty and give a 12th century Andalusian feel to any space. Variations in color and texture are common and are what give handmade Moroccan tile its renowned character.
Our Moroccan tile can be used in both interior and exterior spaces, such as kitchens, bathrooms, saunas, swimming pools, entryways and patios. Listed below are the specifications of our mosaic borders and field tile. More info rmation about our tile is available upon request
Mosaic borders:
Our mosaic borders come in all glazed ceramic or a combination of glazed ceramic and natural terracotta.
The mosaic borders are hand cut and pre-assembled in 4”x 12 ” strips or 6”x 12 ” strips depending on the
style. The standard thickness for all borders is 1/2”. All the mosaic borders are pre-assembled for ease of installation.
Applications:
Suitable for walls and floors and indoor and outdoor use. They are especially well suited for kitchens,
bathrooms, stair risers, columns, fireplaces and swimming pools. No special care is required for the all
glazed borders. We recommend sealing the borders with natural terracotta to protect against water penetration
and dirt and for ease of cleaning.
The sizes and colors of our mosaic borders can be customized to fit any project’s specifications. Please refer

Chiseled borders:
Our chiseled borders are hand carved and come in 4”x 4“ or 2”x 4“ pieces. The standard thickness for all
borders is 1/2”.
Applications:
Suitable for walls and floors and indoor and outdoor use. They are especially well suited for kitchens,
bathrooms, stair risers, columns, and fireplaces. Our chiseled tile blends well with travertine, marble, and
modern ceramic tile. No special care is required for the chiseled tile borders.
The sizes and colors of our chiseled tile can be customized to fit any project’s specifications. Please refer to

Mosaic field tile:
All the mosaic field tile comes in glazed ceramic or natural terracotta and is hand cut and pre-assembled in
12”x 12” squares. The standard thickness for all mosaic field tile is 1/2”. All the mosaic field
tile is pre-assembled for ease of installation.
Loose field tile:
Natural Terracotta Tile
2”x2” square, 1/2“ thick
4“x4” square, 1/2“ - 1” thick
4”x4” octagonal, 1/2“ - 1” thick
6“x6” square, 1/2“ or 1” thick
2“x6” rectangular, 3/4“- 1” thick
Glazed Ceramic Tile
1.25”x1.25” square inserts, 1/2“ thick
2”x2” square, 1/2“ thick
4“x4” square, 1/2“ thick
2“x6” rectangular, 3/4“- 1” thick
Applications:
Suitable for walls and floors and indoor and outdoor use. Commonly used to cover large areas such as
courtyards, swimming pools, entryways, and patios. Also used in kitchens, bathrooms, stairways, and
steam rooms. Moroccans typically surround field tiles with mosaic borders to add dimension and style.
We recommend sealing the natural terracotta field tile to protect against water penetration and dirt and
for ease of cleaning.

Encaustic Cement Tile
The encaustic cement tile is available in many different solid colors, patterns, and borders. The standard
thickness for all encaustic tile is 5/8”. All our encaustic cement tile comes in a soft matte finish.
Available sizes:
4”x 8” rectangular border, 5/8” thick
6”x 8” rectangular border, 5/8” thick
8”x 8” square, 5/8” thick
Applications:
Suitable for floors and indoor and outdoor use. Commonly used to cover large areas such as courtyards,
around swimming pools, entryways, and patios. Also used in kitchen and bathroom floors and stairways.
Moroccans commonly surround solid colored encaustic tile with either patterned encaustic borders or
natural terracotta field tiles to add dimension and style. They also use patterned encaustic tile as medallions.
We recommend sealing the encaustic cement tile to protect against water penetration and dirt and
for ease of cleaning.

Handpainted Tile
The Handpainted tile is available in many different patterns. The pictures above are a representation of a few designs that we carry. You can always customize colors, design and size.
The standard thickness for all handpainted tile is 5/8”.

6”x 6 ”
Applications:
Suitable for low traffic floors and indoor and outdoor use. Commonly used as stair risers, kitchen back splash. Also used around swimming pools, entryways, and bathroom walls. We recommend sealing all handpainted tile used in wet areas to protect against water penetration. You can also enhance the color by waxing the tile.
